About Mike Mathews

A long time ago, I was taught a very important lesson. This person drew two parallel lines on the paper and said, “The line on the left is today. It represents what is happening now, and the world we live in. All the good and the bad. The line on the right represents an ideal state. Best practices. All the theoretical outcomes that we would wish to achieve. Neither is sustainable. We’ll never achieve all of the best practices…we’ll never be perfect. But at the same time, we cannot continue to operate as we are today. We have to evolve, improve, grow, and change. Your job is to understand both, and help bring those two lines, those two realities, closer together.  Now get to work.”

I’ve taken that lesson to heart and think about it often. It has served me well working in large, multinational corporations like Diageo and Treasury Wine Estates. It has been true, also, when working with some of the most prestigious brands in the world included in the portfolio of Wilson Daniels, Ltd. Small and medium sized family wineries like Grgich Hills Estate, Round Pond Estate, and Blackbird Vineyards have also provided me opportunities to apply this philosophy, dive in, and make a difference. No matter what the size of the company or the prestige of the name, there is always a need to bring those two lines, those two worlds, closer together.
